Server Setup

With a little work, and some basic knowledge of the process, anyone can setup a dedicated game server.  I will try to outline the general process, then provide details and examples for you to setup your own game server.  Though finding tidbits about this subject are available all over the internet, a complete guide is non-existent, mainly due to the nature of Quake3 Mods or Modifications.  Example is what we are most familiar with is the UFT or Ultra Freeze Tag Mod.  It has went thru many changes in the last 2 years, and many new features added for client and server side configuration.  Many other Mods are in the same boat.  What this means is that generally speaking, options for both server and client configs are often unique and only work for that mod.  I personally have setup several different Mods as dedicated server, and am a Server Administrator for the AZFL.  I do not claim to know every option for every mod, nor should anyone else, since the dynamics of every mod includes change, which keeps Quake3 Arena an outstanding online gaming engine.

Before we start

You should first understand the basic requirements and limitations of running a dedicated game server.  It does not take a extreme machine to be a game server, however what is required is a lot of bandwidth.  Each player that connects to your server FROM the internet will use approx 6 KB (that's KB or (Kilobytes) not K or kilobits).  So for example, around me the typical DSL line will download files at about 150 KB, or 1.4 megabits a sec.  Upload is 256,000 Kilobits  or 25 KB.  That means I get approx 4 internet players connected my server at home.  So find out what your UPLOAD speed is...that is the key number.  The rate settings in your game server config also play a role on how much bandwidth a player connected can consume and some tuning can be done to allow a few more to connect, but you sacrifice smoothness of play in doing so.
